After they finished shooting the first part of the scene, Catalina took a break, giving Jay an opportunity to speak with the real Mary and Joe. “Hi, Mr. & Mrs. C.”

“Jay.” Mary gave him a hug. “The movie is lucky to have such a talented photographer, and I bet Catalina is very happy to see you again. She was so good as your leading lady.”

“She was.”

“Looks like you two are hitting it off.” Joe nudged Jay.

“We’re getting reacquainted.”

“How wonderful.” Mary clasped her hands in front of her. “You two would make a great couple.”

Jay broke out into a laugh. “Nothing like getting straight to the point, Mrs. C. I’m not sure who loses the subtlety award—you or my mom.”

“See.” A smile widened on Mary’s face. “Your mother and I agree, and we are very good at reading body language.”

Jay shifted, feeling awkward.

“I’m sure Jay didn’t come over to talk about that,” Joe said.

He quickly changed the subject. “Can I ask you a Scrooge question?”

“Of course, dear.”

He stepped closer to Mary, lowering his voice. “Is there anything I can do to speed up Victor’s Scrooge journey?”

“I wish there was, but he’s not an official Scrooge.” She sounded displeased.

“He isn’t?” Jay jerked back, stunned. “I would have bet money it was him.” He frowned. “If he’s not the Scrooge, then who is?”

“Why, Catalina, of course.”

“What?” Another surprise he hadn’t expected. “Are you sure? She’s recently been dubbed the Ice Queen, but I think that’s a mistake. Victor is so much more the Scrooge type.”

“I’m with you there, son,” Joe said, watching Victor yell at someone else.

“Why has she been deemed a Scrooge?” Jay asked, still not believing it.

“Like many of our Scrooges, she’s given up on love. And now she’s cut herself off from the world so much that she can’t even experience the joy of Christmas.”

He couldn’t deny Catalina’s self-isolation. Actors who reached movie-star status often lived sheltered lives. In Catalina’s case, the fortress she’d been building around herself was due to the fear of trusting the wrong people. “She’s been burned, so she doesn’t trust easily anymore.”

“Understandable, but I have faith she’ll be receiving help in that department,” she said, her eyes twinkling.

“I hope so,” he said. “I can confirm that the legend is definitely working on her. She swears she doesn’t believe in magic or miracles, yet she’s been defending the Scrooge Legend, insisting the screenwriter stay as close to Piper’s real story as possible.”

“That’s a great step forward, and I have no doubt she’ll continue in the right direction,” Mary replied. “Unfortunately, Stan isn’t listening to Catalina and is going in the wrong direction. He has thieves stealing Christmas presents and Piper stealing cars.”

“He’s back to that again?” Jay couldn’t understand how the film had ever been green-lit.

She gave him an exhausted look. “We’re working on him.”

“You’re obviously rubbing off on Stan, because he changed the names of the B&B hosts from the last rewrite.”

“What were the names before?” Joe asked.

“Petunia and Kenzo.”

Both Mary and Joe looked like they’d tasted a sour pickle.
