After they finished shooting the first part of the scene, Catalina took a break, giving Jay an opportunity to speak with the real Mary and Joe. âHi, Mr. & Mrs. C.â
âJay.â Mary gave him a hug. âThe movie is lucky to have such a talented photographer, and I bet Catalina is very happy to see you again. She was so good as your leading lady.â
âShe was.â
âLooks like you two are hitting it off.â Joe nudged Jay.
âWeâre getting reacquainted.â
âHow wonderful.â Mary clasped her hands in front of her. âYou two would make a great couple.â
Jay broke out into a laugh. âNothing like getting straight to the point, Mrs. C. Iâm not sure who loses the subtlety awardâyou or my mom.â
âSee.â A smile widened on Maryâs face. âYour mother and I agree, and we are very good at reading body language.â
Jay shifted, feeling awkward.
âIâm sure Jay didnât come over to talk about that,â Joe said.
He quickly changed the subject. âCan I ask you a Scrooge question?â
âOf course, dear.â
He stepped closer to Mary, lowering his voice. âIs there anything I can do to speed up Victorâs Scrooge journey?â
âI wish there was, but heâs not an official Scrooge.â She sounded displeased.
âHe isnât?â Jay jerked back, stunned. âI would have bet money it was him.â He frowned. âIf heâs not the Scrooge, then who is?â
âWhy, Catalina, of course.â
âWhat?â Another surprise he hadnât expected. âAre you sure? Sheâs recently been dubbed the Ice Queen, but I think thatâs a mistake. Victor is so much more the Scrooge type.â
âIâm with you there, son,â Joe said, watching Victor yell at someone else.
âWhy has she been deemed a Scrooge?â Jay asked, still not believing it.
âLike many of our Scrooges, sheâs given up on love. And now sheâs cut herself off from the world so much that she canât even experience the joy of Christmas.â
He couldnât deny Catalinaâs self-isolation. Actors who reached movie-star status often lived sheltered lives. In Catalinaâs case, the fortress sheâd been building around herself was due to the fear of trusting the wrong people. âSheâs been burned, so she doesnât trust easily anymore.â
âUnderstandable, but I have faith sheâll be receiving help in that department,â she said, her eyes twinkling.
âI hope so,â he said. âI can confirm that the legend is definitely working on her. She swears she doesnât believe in magic or miracles, yet sheâs been defending the Scrooge Legend, insisting the screenwriter stay as close to Piperâs real story as possible.â
âThatâs a great step forward, and I have no doubt sheâll continue in the right direction,â Mary replied. âUnfortunately, Stan isnât listening to Catalina and is going in the wrong direction. He has thieves stealing Christmas presents and Piper stealing cars.â
âHeâs back to that again?â Jay couldnât understand how the film had ever been green-lit.
She gave him an exhausted look. âWeâre working on him.â
âYouâre obviously rubbing off on Stan, because he changed the names of the B&B hosts from the last rewrite.â
âWhat were the names before?â Joe asked.
âPetunia and Kenzo.â
Both Mary and Joe looked like theyâd tasted a sour pickle.
